Do Data from Large Personal Networks Support Cultural Evolutionary Ideas about Kin and Fertility?

چکیده
The fertility decline associated with economic development has been attributed to a host of interrelated causes including the rising costs children industrialization, and shifts in family structure. One hypothesis is that kin may impart more pro-natal information within their networks than non-kin, this effect be exacerbated high kin-density where greater social conformity would expected. In study, we tested these ideas using large personal (25 associates respondent) collected from sample Dutch women (N = 706). Kin (parents) were perceived exert slightly pressure have although dense not pressure. contrast, reported talking friends about having extent kin, network increased likelihood reporting they could talk children. Both consanguineal affinal asked help child-care other non-kin. Overall, there was mixed evidence likely offer better suggest considered source support.

In this paper, we explore the diffusion of beliefs pertaining to the causes of childhood diarrhea in rural Guatemala. The analysis focuses on the importance of interpersonal and impersonal contacts as conduits for information and norms related to hygiene and contamination. Estimates from multivariate models reveal that there is evidence of a diffusion process through social contacts, primarily ...

Evolutionary theory has guided the development of antiaging interventions in some conscious and some unconscious ways. It is a standard assumption that the body's health has been optimized by natural selection, and that the most benign and promising medical strategies should support the body's efforts to maintain itself. The very concept of natural healing is a reflection of evolutionary thinki...

Some of the more ambitious projects, s...
